About Me

Associate Professor Steven Pace is the Head of Digital Media in the School of Education and the Arts at CQUniversity. Some highlights of Steven's academic career include:

  • being appointed as an Advance Queensland Community Digital Champion in 2016;
  • winning the award for National ICT Educator of the Year in 2011;
  • receiving a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) in 2011;
  • winning the CQUniversity Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching in 2010
  • serving as a member of the Register of Experts of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA);
  • serving as an international expert for the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications;
  • working on accreditation assessment panels for the Queensland Office of Higher Education;
  • participating in an international research project in South America funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2010;
  • participating in the Australia 3.0 national ICT leaders’ summit;
  • completing a PhD in the field of human-computer interaction at the Australian National University in 2003; and
  • serving two terms as Head of Digital Media at CQUniversity.

2007. Received a grant from the Regional Arts Development Fund to present two free public seminars with visual effects supervisors from Oscar-winning studios Animal Logic and Weta Digital.

2004. Received a grant from the Regional Arts Development Fund and the Regional Centre of the Arts to present Digital Magic - a public seminar featuring digital media artists from the Australian Centre for the Moving Image and Oscar-winning visual effects company Weta Digital.

2005. Received a grant from the CQU Research Development Initiative for a project entitled 'Understanding experiences of flow and telepresence during computer game play: A grounded theory approach'.

2002. Received a grant from the Regional Centre of the Arts to present Raw Digitalent - a public exhibition of digital artwork, short films, web sites and interactive multimedia software created by students from CQU's Bachelor of Multimedia Studies program.

2000. Received a grant from the Queensland Department of Communication and Information to present multimedia careers evenings in Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone and Bundaberg as part of the IT&T Skills Training and Role-models (i-STAR) program. This project was one of three finalists in the Regional Community category of the 2001 Queensland IT&T Awards.

1998. Assisted Mackay Tourism to research, write and promote an application for funding from Networking the Nation, the Federal Government's Regional Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund. The application successfully secured $930,000 for the Mackay region.

1994. Received a grant from the Sugar Research and Development Corporation to investigate the process of converting printed publications and other media into computer-based training applications for sugar industry personnel.

Received an invitation in 2010 from the Amy Mahan Research Fellowship Program (www.upf.edu/amymahan) at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain to mentor two teams of researchers who are studying the social impact of providing low-cost public Internet access to poor South American communities through telecentres sponsored by government and various non-profit organisations. Travelled to Santiago, Chile for a week to mentor a team of researchers at Universidad Diego Portales who are working on a project entitled ‘Women and new technologies in Chile'. Travelled to Buenos Aires, Argentina for a week to mentor another team of researchers from Universidad de San Andrés and Universidad Nacional de La Plata who are working on a project entitled ‘The impact of public access to ICT on Argentine low-income urban youth'. The Amy Mahan Research Fellowship Program is part of a larger international research project entitled ‘The Global Impact Study of Public Access to Information and Communication Technologies' (www.globalimpactstudy.org/about), which is sponsored by Canada's International Development Research Centre (www.idrc.org) and a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (www.gatesfoundation.org).
