My qualifications and experience demonstrate a portfolio career spanning science/health and sociology/education; my science/health qualifications include radiography, nuclear medicine, working with isotopes in both a diagnostic and therapy capacity and mammography. Moving to a regional area in Australia was coupled with a move into the academic environment of sociology. My BA Honours thesis was focused on the development of a healthcare service in Gladstone, Queensland. I completed my PhD in the discipline of sociology in 2003. My doctoral thesis interrogated policies and discursive practices constructing the 'good educational workplace'. My research explored the gap between theory and practice and how dominant discourses positioned the actors and their performances within the workplace.

My research has two major areas of interest; the first area focuses on the changing nature of contemporary work expressed through identity and performance in specific contexts. Since completing my doctoral research I have worked on a number of projects complementing this research interest, including investigating high school and primary science teachers at work, farmers’ perceptions of the impact of regional environmental plans on their work, pre-service teachers transitioning to the school workplace and retention of male teachers through mentoring in the workplace. The second area concerns cultural diversity and the 'regional/rural' space. My current interest focuses on cultural diversity and intercultural communication in the education workplace, along with special education and issues of 'difference' within community.

Current areas of interest include:

Cultural diversity and inclusion

Teacher preparation

ESL teaching and learning

Between 2006 and 2009 I worked with the following visiting Chinese scholars who were supported by Chinese Government scholarships, working in areas of language development and improvement and small research projects concerning English language learning
